Resources

I believe that poetry is both a craft and a conversation.

To grow as a poet and writing coach, I turn to books that challenge me to think differently about language, identity, and community. These ten (10) books are the ones I return to, over and over, to guide me in becoming a better writer, to help move me through writing blocks and to help cultivate my creativity. Reading them helps me become a better listener, and a better guide for others who want to explore poetry’s possibilities.

My top ten book recommendations:

  • Ordinary Genius: A Guide for the Poet Within, Kim Addonizio

  • Finger Exercises for Poets, Dorianne Laux

  • June Jordan’s Poetry for the People: a Revolutionary Blueprint, June Jordan

  • The Practice of Poetry, Robin Behn

  • The Magic Words, Joseph Fasano

  • The Palm of Your Hand: A Poet’s Portable Workshop, Steve Kowit

  • Poet’s Companion: A Guide to the Pleasure of Writing Poetry, K. Addonizo & D. Laux

  • Structure & Surprise: Engaging Poetic Turns, Michael Theune

  • A Poetry Handbook: A Prose Guide to Writing & Understating Poetry, Mary Oliver

  • The Poetry Dictionary, John Drury
